Jean François Henri Schneider was a photographer around 1890 but he is best known as a printer. However, his photos, or the photos of the photographers he employs, are unique, very little known, they fill the private albums of the families who lived in Hanoi and Tonkin in 1887 and 1906.
It’s up to you to discover them!.
But who is FHS as we like to call it?
Jean François Henri Schneider was born on December 1, 1851 in Paris. He volunteered in 1870: francs-tireurs de la presse. Sent on a mission to Tonkin to set up a government printing press (1883), he became head of the workshop and in 1885, acquired it and brought from France special equipment for the printing of business cards and works for individuals. Very close to the governor general Albert Sarraut and a fervent student of the Annamite language, he maintained very good relations with the local Vietnamese authorities. Two strong points that will allow him to establish his notoriety and success.
In 1891 he invested in a paper factory and created a real book school.
In 1902, he was a member of the higher jury at the Hanoi Exhibition and vice-president of the jury of the 1st group. In 1906 in Marseille, he was appointed Tonkin trade delegate to the Colonial Exhibition.
Little by little, he climbed all the steps of the European notables of Tonkin: Consular judge at the commercial court, representative in Tonkin of the Alliance française, Officer of the Academy on January 1, 1905, decorated with the Dragon of Annam, and named Knight of the Legion of Honor
