A camp of Turks???

[English] [français]

``Campement de Turcos, the caption on Raphael Moreau’s postacrd. Strange!

Le campement Turcos

No they’re not Turks, Turco is a nickname given to Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian Rifle Regiments. Turcos, belong to the Infantry Arm. Both belong to the Armée d’Afrique, which refers to the troops of North Africa, made up largely of natives and Europeans.
At the time of the postcard shown here, the Turcos were part of an “expeditionary” unit, i.e. a unit temporarily present in the country.
It’s true that for Europeans in 1900, soldiers dressed in large white burnous, Muslims, are Turks!
Thanks to André for these clarifications.

No barracks, tents

Dressed in white, laundry.
